  • The Glorious Lost Cause: Not Glorious, Just LOST

The Glorious Lost Cause: Not Glorious, Just LOST

This is my second blog post on this topic. But I feel it needs to be addressed again and again, LOUDLY, as by as many people as possible. The Glorious Lost Cause needs to be dismantled. The Civil War was NOT glorious, and the South LOST. It was not a war over “states’ rights” but a war stage-managed by the slave owners to protect their right to own and use human-beings as chattel. It was a class and culture war, true. Many of the poor whites, i.e. those not coming directly from plantation families, were fighting on behalf of an ideal that benefitted them little. Fake news was indeed in play during this time, largely spread to inveigle those same poor whites into fighting this war. “States’ Rights”, “The War Of Northern Agression”,  and “the happy slave” were just some of the terms used at the time to cajol people into fighting. But slave-owners in truth placed poor whites on much the same socio-economic place as their African American slaves and saw them as only a little above the beasts they claimed their slaves to be. Cannon fodder, indeed!

So to all those who decry the recent taking down of Confederate statues and fly the battle flags of the Confederacy, I suggest you do some reading of history before you go proudly embracing the white supremacy of the Neo-Confederates. Find out who your ancestors were and look into their past. Get a DNA test done (gotta have prof of that white blood, right?) I would recommend Nancy Isenberg’s book White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History Of Class In America. After that wake-up call, then read Michael Eric’s Dyson’s Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon To White America.

To my Anglo-Saxon aquaintances here in Abingdon who love their Confederate Soldier  statue and Confederate Dead section of the cemetary: should you wish to be proud of relics of a war fought not for you nor for your ancestors, go right ahead. But the time has come for these NOT to be in the public eye. The South lost a war it fought for a intolerable ideal. These reminders which glorify that heritage need to be removed and either  publicly destroyed (my hope) or placed into private venues. Like it or not-and I know many of you don’t- the South alongside the rest of America is now multicultural and multiracial. We need to embrace that reality, not cling to some mythical past.

  • Hope And Despair As A Trans Person

Hope And Despair As A Trans Person

Over the past week, I’ve been visited by outrage over the continuing rollback of LGBTQ rights by Trump (#notmypresident) & Co. There were Trump’s obnoxious and factually incorrect tweets about not allowing trans people to serve in military, though the armed forces are not yet reversing their policies. The Justice Department headed by Sessions is arguing that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not cover discrimination based on sexual orientation. And in a further slap in the face to us Trump appointed Sam Brownback, known for his vociferous anti-LGBTQ views, as his religious ambassador. (In case you’re wondering, the religion that Brownback is representing is Christianity. Like we really need that. Snort.) Texas joins NC in stating that trans individuals who are government employees or attending public school must use the bathroom which corresponds to the gender stated on their birth certificate. (So should you be visiting Texas, make sure you have both proof of citizenship and your birth certificate on hand!)

BUT…I found a glimmer of hope in a very unexpected place: An acquaintance of mine who is a confirmed Trump supporter evinced great disgust at the administration’s positions on LGBTQ rights and Trump’s anti-trans tweets in particular. You could have knocked me over with a feather when he told me this! Of everyone I know, I would have never considered that HE would prove an ally! He said that the violence against LGBTQ individuals that he reads about makes him sick and that we should have the same rights and protections as everyone else. Wow. This coming from a member of Trump’s base is extremely heartening.

I am probably the only queer trans person he knows. But I have been very outspoken about being queer and trans (and progressive and atheist) as part of my one-person consciousness-raising program. One of my doctors told me that he has fears for my safety b/c of this, in fact. Perhaps it’s actually having an effect? I do this b/c I want the people I know to have a face when they hear about LGBTQ issues. That makes it much harder for them to demonize us, imho. If someone they know and like is queer, then perhaps they’ll think twice before endorsing heinous policies regarding us. They’ll remember that these do not only affect nameless strangers but are meant for someone who has helped them with their groceries, paid their  bus fare, inquired about their health, etc. So being visible is important to me. The more people see that we are their neighbors, friends, and family members, the more they will realize that we are people and citizens not unlike themselves. This is what I hope.

  • So Transparent-NOT

    So Transparent-NOT

I have to write about Donald Trump, Jr. The whole debacle is further proof that Trump (#notmypresident) and his family seem to be TRYING to provide fodder for bloggers, late-night comedians, and all those who deem this admin a joke. He has changed his story 5 times. As details come to light, he looks more and more guilty, not to mention stupid AF. I’ve watched Junior come up with excuse after excuse. Trump’s admin keeps trying to spin this. The main story seems to be “He didn’t actually get any damaging info, so this doesn’t count.” EXCUSE ME??? That is NOT the point. The point is: You and others in the Trump campaign knowingly and eagerly met with RUSSIANS to get damaging info on HRC. Merrian-Webster has changed the spelling of “collusion” to “JUNIOR” because of you! This is like saying: “Yes, officer, I DID break into that house and steal items. But no crime was committed b/c they weren’t worth much!” Your INTENT was to collude with a foreign government to win the major election in the United States. Whether or not you succeeded (in this meeting, at least) is irrelevant.

Kushner, also present at this meeting, has amended his security clearance 3 times. He keeps forgetting meeting with foreign offials, i.e. Russians. Sessions also has neglected to list HIS contacts with Russian officials. With Russia being a main topic before, during, and after Trump’s election, how the fuck do you forget something like this? Were I a Trump official, I would even be putting down, “I watched Boris Badenov as a youngster!” But, nooooo. These people seem to have a collective and selective amnesia, which filters out meetings with foreign ambassadors, government representatives, and anyone else who might prove problematic. As the Church Lady would say, “Well, isn’t that convenient?!!”

  • Where Is My Country?

    Where Is My Country?

I read the morning news and wonder, “Wtf happened to the US I used to inhabit? Where did my country go?” I once lived in a place that, though there might be conflict and discord, was still civilized, somewhat predictable, and I felt safe. Now daily I read reports of science being under attack, mass-shootings, the unceasing rollback of LGBTQ rights, police targeting African Americans, and more. So much more thatmerely opening a newspaper feels risky. I have to steel myself for  bad news.

We have a POTUS (#notmypresident) who is unstable, vicious, petty, and often incoherent. No-one, not his staff, his administration, nor even himself knows he will say or do next. Other nations are understandably nervous about this. He has insulted more countries and heads of state than I care to note. Rather than going about the business of governing, he spends his time reacting to whatever catches his attention and attacking anyone (esp. women) and anything that he feels threatened him.

Meanwhile, though the GOP controls both the House and the Senate and the Supreme Court, they have been unable to pass a healthcare bill. The infighting in the GOP and the continuing resistance from Democrats reflects the fractured state of the country and the chaotic trickle-down of instability from the WH. The polarization is so extreme that a citizen attempted a major attack on Congress members, driven largely by partisan frustration. Protests continue to roil the landscape and often turn into violent confrontations.

The situation is dire enough that states do not feel secure in the union.  I read about movements in both California and Texas to SECEDE entirely, both being stark examples of the the left and the right. States and cities increasingly have to act on their own to protect vulnerable citizens-religious minorities (Muslims, Jews, basically anyone who is not Christian), LGBTQ individuals, immigrants, minorities, and women-in an effort to shield them from fallout from the capitol. Sometimes they do so, but often they fail and even join in the efforts to curtail their rights and safety.

I could go on. The utterly dystopian ad by the NRA comes to mind. But I will stop here. I wrote this largely out of grief. I’m in a state of mourning for a world that seems far removed from the country I inhabited only a year ago. I wish this were just a momentary lapse in continuity. But I fear now: for my nation, my fellow citizens, and myself.

  • WTF: Trump’s Iowa Rally And The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test

WTF: Trump’s Iowa Rally And The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test

I’ve come to the conclusion that there are Republicans and then are Trump supporters. His Iowa rally proved that for me beyond any shadow of a doubt. After that campaign rally-and that’s what it was, call it what you will-I now think that WHAT Trump says matters not one bit to his base. What matters is his PRESENCE, and I keep getting unnerving flashes of Hitler at HIS rallies, when I see Trump among his followers.

Why do I say this? Let’s look at one of the things they were cheering: A solar-panelled wall that would save money for Mexico. SERIOUSLY??? Trump has consistently spoken out AGAINST clean energy. He disparaged wind turbines, a notable source of energy for many Iowans. He took the U.S. out of the Paris agreement, causing us to rebuked by NORTH KOREA. Trump claimed this was HIS idea, btw. Ahem, not true.  This idea was explored in a WSJ Op-ED piece AND by one of the companies that  submitted a design to the government. But, despite this, the crowd cheered on. Why let some glaring inconsistencies and downright lies spoil the fun. Let’s not go into the whys and wherefores of why this wouldn’t work and would be a waste of money, even should it be proven possible.

Then there’s the whole “save money for Mexico” bit. People thought THIS was great, too. After all, we want to do as much to help our neighbor to the south as possible, right? Trump and his supporters have ALWAYS been strongly in favor of aiding Mexico….ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY NOT! Trump has done more to anger and disempower Mexico than any president in my lifetime. I won’t say ever b/c I haven’t done enough research. But he talks about NAFTA, factories moving to Mexico, and we won’t even go into what he says about actual Mexicans.  (I know I get keep saying “Let’s not go into….” . Sorry. So much Trump, so little time.)

That was just a dissection of one of the things he said. I’ve said this before but am more convinced of it than ever: Trump supporters do NOT care about Trump’s words, tweets, ideas, or positions, content-wise. I truly believe he could announce that he would be personally sacrificing a kitten to Satan (in whom I don’t believe FYI) on the White House lawn EVERY morning, surrounded by 3 Goldman-Sachs execs, sorry, cabinet members and people would be convinced that this was FINE. Fox and Friends would provide commentary on how kitten sacrifices were an American tradition dating back to the Revolutionary times…and did you know that Abraham Lincoln himself sacrificed a BLACK kitten in the Oval Office? SMH in disgust……

  • Gay?Not Okay! Anti-LGBTQ Legislation Continues To Be Passed

Gay?Not Okay! Anti-LGBTQ Legislation Continues To Be Passed

Remember DJT promising to be a great friend to “the gays” and brandishing a rainbow flag at his rallies (well, at at least one rally that was photoghaphed)? So much for that! The rollback of protection for LGBTQ indviduals and couples coninues apace, as states pass laws that place “religious liberty” above the rights of LGBTQ citizens and deny  the protection of law from those who are most often targeted.  The courts in one state, Mississippi, even went so far as to pass an entirely redundant law to PROTECT those engaged in anti-LGBTQ discrimination.

And lest you think this is purely a Southern state phenomenon, the courts of South Dakota, North Dakota, AND Michigan joined Virginia, Alabama, Texas, West Virginia, and as mentioned, Mississippi, to pass laws that either allow institutions to discriminate against LGBTQ persons in the name of religion or deny LGBTQ persons protect from hate-crimes.  Apparently, along with no longer being counted in the Census, we can no longer do things like adopt children, GET BURIED (Mississippi-why am I not surprised?), or oh, I don’t know….JUST EXIST without being an affront to right-thinking people everywhere.

This is not to be taken lightly. We need to treat this seriously. Just because OBergefell became law doesn’t mean a f…. thing anymore. We need to get out and put people into office who will stand up for HUMAN RIGHTS. Not tomorrow. Not next week. NOW. Stand up; speak out; RESIST and VOTE!

  • Statues, Memory, And Soil

    Statues, Memory, And Soil

I’ve been reading lately about the heated atmosphere surrounding the removal of statues of Confederate figures in New Orleans. I know those statues and have often used them to give directions to people attempting to get to various places in the French Quarter.  I’ve followed the story of their plight with some interest, as I am from the South and this IS a particularly and peculiarly Southern problem.  The South is dotted with statues, obelisks, plaques, and other monuments to the glorious heroes and fighters of the Lost Cause. Now, mind you, when you grow up in the South, as a young child it can be a LONG TIME before anyone ever tells you THAT THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO LOST THE WAR! I had extraordinary parents who did do and at an early age. I reasonably asked,”Then why are there statues of them everywhere?” My father sighed and replied, “This is the South; that is a difficult question; you’re much too young for hard liquor.”

Personal history aside, I’ve heard the arguments that we should leave these things up for the sake of history and as some sort of teaching instuments. I find those argument totally and completely spurious. For the sake of history? Like the entire South is going to have a complete bout of amnesia, should the monuments get taken down? The battles of the Civil War and the struggles upon which it was based-that of slavery and man’s oh-so-human urge to trample wholesale on the rights of others based on skincolor-are soaked into the very soil of the Southern states. Southerners, whether there by birth or geographical accident and whatever their race-are confronted with the legacy of the slavery every day, like it or not. I hardly think that the absence of some statues will make us forget. Not when we’ve got neighbors who persist in flying the Confederate flag from their pick-up truck or porch. Not when we’ve got the legacy of Jim Crow lingering in our voting districts, our laws and our attitudes. Not when when we’ve got a resurgence of white supremacists looking back fondly to a society that exists only in fiction and calling it the South. I’m not sorry to see the statues et al. coming down.  As for the “Never forget!” contingent, some of us are busy trying to build a new society, not hark back to the Old Dixie that lives mainly in your beer cans and fevered imagination.

  • Trump’s Religious Liberty Executive Order-A Call To Arms

Trump’s Religious Liberty Executive Order-A Call To Arms

If this was an actual repeal of the Johnson Amendment, I would be greatly alarmed. BUT, like many of Trump’s orders, this is sturm und drang aimed at mollifying  his more conservative Evangelical Christian followers and as usual it failed to do even the job for which it was designed. I’ve read the order and some some excellent analyses of it. In the end, it boils down to little more than Trump instructing to tell the IRS to do something it does anyway.  No religious leaders or organizations have actually been persecuted under the Johnson Amendment. It is more of a cautionary “Smokey Bear” threat looming in the horizon- and often ignored in the breech. During the recent election, especially, pastors took to the pulpits to give their opinions on both candidates and give moral guidance on politcal issues. And no IRS agents appeared at their doors.

The order also contains some language designed to give companies that are religiously owned and operated more leeway in terms of granting their employees birth control. WHY is this  still an issue? There a work-around built into the ACA that allow the insurance company to do so, thus freeing the company itself doing so. (Don’t even get me started on Trumpcare.) But apparently this does not go far enough. I suppose religious organzations like Hobby Lobby (snort) and Little Sisters of the Poor want it taken totally off the table. I disagree that they should be allowed to do this. They are NOT in the business of healthcare and should not be allowed to dictate what healthcare their employees receive. But I digress. The language of Trump’s order about this is incredibly vague and doesn’t really say anything beyond a call to draft new rules letting businesses draft rules that would allow them to avoid giving employees contraception and that ALREADY is in place.

So. Trump by himself cannot repeal the Johnson Amendment. THAT takes an act of Congress. He is being sued by the Freedom from Religion Foundation (GO ATHEISTS!) on behalf of secularists everywhere, since the ACLU declined to bring suit. I would like to see what would happen if more pastors, priests, preachers, imams, rabbis, Pagans of all stripes, Hindus, Sikhs, Pastafarians, Satanists, etc started taking advantage of this “religious liberty” order! Let’s hear from ALL of you, not just Trump’s far-right anti-LGBTQ xenophobic  Neo-Con Fundies! Let’s get political, people! Let’s PARTY…and I’m speaking DEMOCRAT SOCIALIST!

  • Alabama Church May Get Own Police Force

Alabama Church May Get Own Police Force

The Alabama senate passed a bill on Tuesday that will allow Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama the right to create its own police force to patrol its grounds and schools.  These officers have to remain on the church property but will be “invested with all the power of law enforcement officers” in Alabama, according to the bill that won by a 24-4 vote in the state Senate. A version of the bill failed last year, after passing both houses but the governor at the time, Gov. Robert Bentley, refused to sign it into law. Concerns over the creation of private security forces were cited by the administration. But apparently that concern has been muted for the new governor, and so the bill might actually get signed into law.

The orignators of this bill cite the fact that religious educational institutions of higher learning, such as BYU and other universities, have their own police forces. They claim to want to “mirror” a code of Alabama law that allows for the employment of one or more law enforcement officers at a college or private educational institution. They cite practical reasons, reaching back to the tragedy at Sandy Hook for their justification as a need to have first responders on hand for their members and to coordinate with the local community.

Let’s look at this. First of all, I want to ask, WHY does a church, specifically a predominantly WHITE mainstream-denomination church need a police force of its very own? Historically, the churches that have been the scenes of violence have been the BLACK churches, particularly in the South. Just ask any member of the Emanuel African Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. This sounds suspiciously like a case of Christian paranoia running rampant.

Secondly, I want to know what oversight there will be for this police force? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Will there be transparency, or will there be the usual religious exemption from scutiny? Alabama has already encountered a problem here, with its religious day schools. They have been the subject of a number of articles detailing abuse and neglect. But, due to the fact that they are run by RELIGIOUS organizations, and that means CHRISTIAN, in case you were wondering, the State Department of Human Resouces has no way to even investigate these stories. I imagine that, should Briarwood be allowed to establish its police force, a similar religious exemption from accountability will most likely be part of the bargain. Just one of those little believer’s perks….

Third, I’m wondering if Alabama (and other states to follow) will grant similar privileges to NON-CHRISTIAN places that might want their own police force? I’m willing to bet that mosques and synagogues need police officers (for the congregants’ protection) WAY more than churches do! (Unless you are an African American Christian. Then you DO need your own police force. Plus, a police force to protect you FROM the first police force.) And Hindu temples need them, too. Ignorant people now think Indians are Muslim terrorists and want to kill them. And let’s not forget the Pastafarians! The Church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster deserves a police force! Seriously, can you imagine Trump’s America giving a MOSQUE, even one with a madrassa, permission to have its own police force? Or even a synagogue? Snort! I don’t see it happening. (Though let me just say, that as a Jew, the idea of a bunch of goyishe policemen surrounding me at shul would NOT make me feel safer….my bubbe would be whispering from her grave, “Run, kindele, run!”)

I’m going to keep an eye on this story. Alabama…sigh. Doing its best to make Mississippi look “not so bad”. But, hey, at least no-one from the state made any Hitler references yet (publicly, that is).
